Costco Gas Can, Scepter Smart Control 5 Gallon

Costco sells this Scepter 5 Gallon Gas Can for $16.99. Scroll down for photos. This is one of those items I ALWAYS keep full in my shed. I’ve got a smaller 2.5 gallon one & it’s great to have around. I use it for my Honda 2200 generator, as well as a few other gas items, & it’s always nice to have fresh gas available. I’ve got a buddy who likes to fill a couple of these up & top his boat off with 5 to 10 gallons at a time. Gas on the water can be very expensive, so this really helps keep the price down. I think I picked mine up at Walmart a few years back & it was around $25 – $30. This is a bargain at only $16.99. Here are a few more details about this Costco 5 Gallon Gas Can……..

Costco Scepter Smart Control 5 Gallon Gas Can

As always, make sure that you store your gasoline properly inside/outside your home. I always keep mine in the shed that has decent ventilation. If I don’t use it for a couple of months I end up topping off my vehicle. The nice thing about that is if I don’t feeling like getting gas before work I can get another 2.5 gallons in my tank, which will get me home & back. These no spill containers are great too! Mine has a similar feature & I have no problem filling my car or generator. No spills & no mess. Don’t forget to fill up at Costco & get your 4% cash back! If you can’t find these at Costco, or want a different size, make sure to check out these HIGHLY RATED gas containers…….

  1. We are returning 6 of the gas cans we purchased at Costco. They are too cumbersome to lift, press, and pour. Simplicity is what we want. The gas spilled down the side of the can and onto the ground. You get what you pay for in this case. Sometimes when an item is a good deal, it’s a good deal for a reason. The gas cans I am going to purchase will have 2 handles. These are not good to use for pouring gas in a vehicle. I could not use my liquid transfer pump either due to the gas cans filter.

  2. I got the 5 gal can and will be returning it! Not made for a car gas tank! could not get the gas to go in! got gas on me on the ground IT COST TO MUCH OR I WOULD TRASH IT RETURN!!! SAID MADE IN USA IT SHOULD ALSO SAY NOT FOR CAR TANKS.

  3. You don’t mention how a pain it is to use this with a car. You have to lift all the weight with one arm while depressing the (knob) with the other and the depressing is the pain. You even need to use your leg to support the lift arm. The spout is very short and you have to angle the spout so you can get it to pour out into the vehicle. Your palm or thumb gets very exhausted. You will get spillage, so wear latex gloves.

    1. Thanks for the tip Dun. Ya, depending on the features of the gas can, they can be a pain in the butt. Sorry to hear you have trouble with yours. We use ours for small portable generators, so it’s not an issue like putting it in a vehicle. Thanks for the comment

  4. I reached out to the company that makes them. I also reached out to Costco. You are correct it is seasonal. Scepter does still sell to Costco. I couldn’t wait so picked up one at local big box improvement store. I could have gotten a used one cheap but hubby was concerned used container might have oil or other undesirable residue the generator was expensive. It came with all sorts of warnings. Thank you for responding.

    1. Glad to hear you got your hands on one! This happens to me all the time. As soon as I need something that I know Costco has sold in the past, it’s gone. It was a great deal. You could always pick up an extra when you they hit the shelves again. I agree with you on buying a new one. Better to not deal with the hassle of a dirty can. Glad it worked out!

    1. I found this in most Costco’s during the summer. This is a seasonal item that will hopefully be back in spring. I’ll try to keep you posted if I see them again

  5. How do you fill up this gas can at Costco pump. Pump nozzle would not go down in gas can hole???

I am returning this gas can

    1. Did you pull back on the black cover of the gas pump. It depends on what type of gas pump you have, but when you put the pump in a car, this black cover usually engages the pump. When you put it in a gas can it does not engage, so you have to manually pull back the black cover. It’s a safety feature. I hope that makes sense & I hope it helps
